Old electrical and electronic products contain valuable materials and therefore do not belong in the household waste!

For this reason, as a consumer, you are obliged under the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act in Germany (“Law on the placing on the market, return and environmentally friendly disposal of electrical and electronic equipment”) to ensure that it is disposed of properly and separately from household waste. To make this clear, all new electrical and electronic products that have been put on the market since 2005 have been provided with the symbol of a crossed-out garbage can, as a visible sign of resource conservation and environmental protection.

The electrical law regulates what happens to the collected electrical and electronic products:

They must be collected and transported in such a way that no dangerous substances can be released on the way. Certified waste management companies treat the products, render pollutants harmless and recover raw materials in complex processes, which are recycled into the production process as secondary raw materials. For suitable old products, the legislator also prescribes an examination of whether reuse would be possible. Ideally, the old products can be refurbished and reused as good used ones. Second-hand smartphones, PCs and laptops in particular may be suitable for a second or third life. In this respect, the proper collection and disposal of electrical and electronic products protects the climate and the environment and also protects the increasingly scarce resources on earth.
